Welcome to all students of the English programs at UQAM!

This blog is your playground. It is a safe place to share your stories, your experiences, your knowledges and advices as well as your creativity on cultural and linguistic matters and on issues of identity and community. 

Short stories, essays, articles and more are welcome to be submitted! 

Topic examples: 
  • Personal stories (Why I am here; why I am at UQAM; How I got here; Where I am now) 
  • Learning a 2nd, 3rd or 4th language 
  • Canadian and Quebec society and culture
  • LGBTQ culture/Immigrating here as a LGBTQ person 
  • French-English rivalries 
  • Learning English in a French environment 
  • Adjusting to a new/different life in Quebec
  • Culture shock
  • Advices as a student, a newcomer or a single parent
  • Unexpected successes/challenges
  • Being an insider/outsider
  • Etc.
Submissions conditions :
  • It must be in English
  • It must be about the topics above
  • It must contain less than a 1000 words
Submission period is between September and May

For various reasons, I’ve been a student at UQAM for many years. Although I’ve never been diagnosed, I probably have some version of ADHD or something similar. There’s an H in there, that’s for sure. The First C.L.I.C. Discussion Event: Safe Round Table

Last February 14th, for Love day, about 15 students gathered to discuss and have a conversation about why they left their past lives. While most students spoke about their departure from their home country, the conversation went on several topics surrounding each student's sharing. It was an opportunity for everyone to share parts of their stories and experiences, and at the same time a chance to hear about others, and perhaps, learn new vocabulary.  Moreover, we had some refreshments such as teas, herbal teas and juices and some great home made cookies (by Alizée) to nibble on while actively listening to others. Why have I left? Why will I go back?

Although from Tunisia, I am also a citizen of the world. I am convinced that the best way to acquire experiences and knowledge is by getting out of our comfort zone, to understand the functioning of systems different from ours, by going into new adventures. I believe that opening to people and the world is the true wealth; and the greatest assets that one can bring to their country (in my case Tunisia) are precisely openness, generosity and knowledge. I am also greatly convinced that those who have gone back to share what they have learned the hard way are, in a sense, those who will allow us to dream of a better future (provided they do not forget where they come from of course). It's easy to point out what's wrong but not so much to stay out and fight for it. Courageous are those who leave their country for a better future but reckless are those who remain at the front against everything. Northern Irish English

😊 You may know the classification of a variety of English called World Englishes. It refers to the different English varieties in different countries or territories. Some students took the course of Language awareness last fall. They were asked to analyze a specific English variety by watching a given TV program. Among them, several students did excellent jobs.  C.L.I.C. will share their reports with you one by one. The first report is about Northern Irish English.
